First Nations housing roles and responsibilities
First Nations are responsible for providing and managing housing on reserve. The Government of Canada provides funding to First Nations for safe and affordable on-reserve housing.
First Nations communities that receive annual funding from Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) for on-reserve housing can use these funds for a variety of housing needs, including:
- construction
- lot servicing
- renovation
- maintenance
- insurance
- debt servicing
- planning and managing their housing portfolio
- mould remediation
In addition to ISC funds, other Government of Canada departments have programs available to support housing on reserve. Visit Housing for Indigenous peoples to find these programs.
