Tootinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve

Repairs to the water treatment system underway; feasibility study to address long-term needs underway

Project tracker

Projected lift date: June 2025

Tootinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve, located in Manitoba, is home to approximately 712 people on reserve.

There is 1 long-term drinking water advisory affecting approximately 111 homes and 12 community buildings:

  • a do not consume advisory for the Tootinaowaziibeeng Public Water System was issued in July 2023 and became long-term in July 2024

The community has developed an action plan to address the long-term drinking water advisory and is working with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) to implement their plan.

For the short-term:

  • the community received funding to purchase a containerized water treatment bottling plant unit that treats water and refills bottles directly in the community. The containerized unit was installed in fall 2023 and is expected to be fully commissioned in September 2024. This unit will provide the community with a reliable local safe drinking water supply.

For the medium-term:

  • the community completed the design of repairs to the water treatment system. Construction tender is planned for September 2024 with construction completion anticipated for summer 2025. ISC will support the community in exploring all opportunities to accelerate the repairs.

Once the repairs are complete, the community will have reliable access to clean drinking water that is safe for everyone to use and should be in a position to lift the drinking water advisory.

For the long-term:

  • in June 2024, the community started a water treatment feasibility study to assess options to meet the community's future water needs. The study is expected to be completed by March 2025.

The Circuit Rider Training Program supports Tootinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve with training and mentoring of a water operator to ensure the drinking water supply is maintained and safe for everyone in the community to use.
